Dross was colonized in 4520 AD by the One and Twelve techcult. They sponsored and lead nearly 25,000 people to the barren planet. Several thousand were lost along with two supply ships in route.

Had a large amount of volcanic activity in the past, though less relative to Earth. It is similar to Mars, but with a thinner crust and is colder. Also about a 160 million years ago a number of comets crashed into the planet, making distinctive craters and gifting the surface with water and carbon. It is thought that the core of one or more of these comets were giant hollow diamonds within which aliens first arrived on Dross.
The primal layer is 6.9-16.8 klicks (4.5-11 yules) deep. The decaying layer is 5.8-8.4 klicks (3.8-5.5 yules) deep. The human level is around 4.3-6.9 klicks (2.8-4.5 yules) deep. The silent layer is 2.3-4.9 klicks (1.5-3.2 yules) deep. The demon layer is typically 0.6-3 klicks (0.4-2 yules) deep. The hard rock layer is found 13.9-16.8 klicks (9.1-11 yules) deep, broken only by hotspots. Though hot spots going half way to the surface are common, volcanoes that reach the surface are very rare. Note, x-tech standard begins to be replaced with slavaer standard in the seventh century of Dross as part of the influence of interstellar trade as a result of the second colinization.
The hard rock layer extends all the way down to the upper mantle of Dross. Because it is cooler then Earth it's mantle is about twice as far from the surface. Most of Dross's crust is a part of the hard rock level.
The primal layer is inhospitable to humans, more cracks then caverns and the air is quite rough due to volcanic gasses. The line between primal and hard rock is simply defined by when the pressure and other conditions become unsuitable for life.
The human level has good air due to the primal level's life work. The caverns are large and stable due to biomachines and the relatively small amount of tetonic activity.
The demon layer has an excess of water and carbon dioxide. The plant-like life is chokingly thick which is neccessary to hold the subterranean atmosphere and warmth in. The demon layer is cramped around the demon wells, down which water, oxygen and monsters flow. The plant-like life gets it's energy from ___???
