Endangered Ecosystem
By Nedroj Walker
War and greed, shortsighted and selfish. Human failings war with the wisdom of our cultural elders. The sweeping monoculture is an ocean rising. Rivers, ponds, even great lakes and high glaciers get swept up, mixed and diluted so that little potency is left.
Nepal is an island in a sea of clouds. We are lucky to taste the fruits of its peaks, and we should savor its taste, for at this rate it will not last.
Good people across the globe make choices every day that better the world, protect what is endangered, and change what needs changing. The good people of Nepal need help protecting one of the last great treasures of Earth.
The value of their ecosystem can not be measured, because there is no where else on earth that matches the size or scope of the Himalayas. For life to survive there it must be both strong and wise. But birthing a modern world brings change at a rate no life can match, no world can sustain.
When the equilibrium between the Nepalese villages and their mountains is shattered, the flora that has survived everything nature could throw at it gets mowed down with tragic efficiency. When it is gone, it is gone forever. There are no second chances when we live and die in less then a blink of nature's eye. If we do not chose to help protect this treasure, then we should at least apologize to our children now so there is no question where the onus lies when history judges us.
