Pures are humans that are seen as being closest to the human median. In many Dross societies being without any adaptation to subterranean life is a sign of high class. In such societies often those that look too different are ostracized and labeled trolls. Pures are often actually vins, but any adaptation is unnoticed by the naked eye.
